Styled by Walter Belgrove with a slab sided body, the Vanguard was Standards first post WW2 car, intended for export, its name draws on wartime, and is called after HMS Vanguard, Britains last Battleship launched in 1944 The tough six seaters, with a styling nod towards the contemporary Plymouths, with wet liner engine, all syncromesh three speed gearbox, hydraulic brakes, coil independant front suspension and a separate chassis. The engine was essentially the same as that made by Standard for the Ferguson tractor, with some changes for automobile use.
Convertibles by Imperia available in Belgium only.
The body was updated in 1952, as the Phase 1a with a lowered bonnet line, a wider rear window and a new grille featuring a wide horizontal chrome bar in place of the narrow, more closely packed slats of the original grille
The Phase 1 was available as a 4d Saloon, a 4d Estate Car, a two door Van and this 2d Coupe Utility. The Coupe Utility was always a very rare sight in the UK, were it would have called a Pick Up, but almost the entire production was exported pricipally to Australia and marketed as a Coipe Utility, abreaviated to Ute.
The Phase i was given a facelift for 1952, it final model year, and released as the Phase 1A, with a lowered bonnet line, a wider rear window and a new grille featuring a wide horizontal chrome bar in place of the narrow, more closely packed slats of the original grille
Superceeded by the Vangaurd Phase II from 1953.
