The original Hummmers were designed by A M General Corporation, a subsiduary of AMC and were built in Mishawaka, Indiana, in respone to a request from the US Army for a High Mobility Multi-Purpose Wheeled Vehicle, there were four competing bids and A M Generals response was to an all new vehicle which was delivered as a prototype in less than one year. With the required number of prototypes delivered to the Army proving grounds in April 1982.
After testing A M General were awarded the first contract for $1.2 billion dollars to supply 55,000 Humvees by 1985, the first vehicle was delivered 2nd January 1985 with the others following and the contract was extended for a further 15,000 units. The military Humvee went on to earn its spurs during the first Gulf War and has proved effective ever since.
A M Genral had always planned to build a civilian version and in 1992 the first civilian Hummer went on sale.
In December 1999 A M General sold the brand name to GM but continued to build the vehicles, with GM becoming responsible for the distribuition and marketing
