Designed by Italian stylist Giovanni Michelotti as mid sized rear wheel drive car, under the project name Project Barb. The car was presented at the 1963 London Motor Show for the 1964 model year.as a Saloon and from 1965 also as an Estate car. he estate, its body shell partly built by Carbodies, was in the Mk 1 version the same length as the saloon.

The Triumph 2000 and its larger engined sibling the 2500 were aimed at the luxury end of the saloon car market competed with the contemporary Rover P6 2000, which initially was offered only with a four-cylinder engine. The Rover was also released in October 1963, just one week before the Triumph

The Mark 1 was replaced by an updated mark 2 vwersion in 1969.

 

Production continued until 1969 when replaced by a mark II version.
