Cleo

1970 - The Pink Palace rodent control officer. Cleo has dealt to another intruder. Her favourite trick was flipping cockroaches on their backs and let the ants deal to them. Took on a snake once that ended up behind the firewall of one of the Land-Rovers. Couldn't get it out so left note on steering wheel - "snake behind dash". No one was game to drive it for a week. Looking part Dingo and part Corgi, she was part of the team, always came to the beach with us on Sundays, didn't look forward to her bath afterwards. We'd get pet products sent up from family members in NZ. I'd always take Cleo out if I was travelling around Qui Nhon, she would sit on the ledge behind my head up against the armour plate with her head hanging out the window. If I was visiting a Vietnamese she'd stay in Landrover and if coaxed out she would look pathetic shaking & shivering and would not leave my side. The US Army Vets gave her regular rabies shots and issued her with her own dog tags. In 1989 we were told by Ba (PP's house keeper) that Cleo had passed away in the early eighties. Note: Had a long chat to Peter (the last Kiwi out of Qui Nhon) he'd left Cleo with the Catholic priest in Qui Nhon. Peter's story is amazing especially the evacuation of the Kiwis from Saigon. (I think Ba was giving us a happy ending).
