Line-up

9 aPRIL 2011: Trois Bassins, Reunion Island – Opening event on this year’s ASP European Junior Series, the ASP 3-Star Men’s Yop Reunion Surf Pro Junior got underway today in clean three-foot (one-meter) waves at Trois-Bassins. In its inaugural edition of the ASP caravan on Reunion Island’s idyllic surf breaks, the Yop Reunion Surf Pro Junior got into serious action from Day 1.

Leading the hungry pack of Under-21 surfers, Moroccan Ramzi Boukiam (Agadir, MAR) opened his twenty-five minute battle with a solid 7.00 point ride before wrapping-up his run with a solid 8.00 pointer and take the day’s top performance. ASP European Junior No. 3 last year, Boukiam stepped-up amongst the ranks of Under-21 professional surfing and qualified for the ASP World Junior Tour in 2010 where he finished No. 30.

Event top seed and longtime ASP European Junior Top 10 member, Pierre-Valentin Laborde (Hossegor, FRA) left no chance to his Round 1 opponents, the experienced competitor confirming his free-surf impressive performance from yesterday to advance comfortably ahead of Nelson Cloarec (Hossegor, FRA).

Laborde, a former ASP World Junior No. 5 and still chasing his first event win on the ASP European Junior Series, made his intentions clear since he landed on Reunion Island, training hard and speding time in the water to get in rhythm with the location and conditions.

Much expected by local crowds and renowned for his fast tube riding abilities, local Kieran Bulard (REU) followed the footsteps of his peers to secure the second best run of the local contingent behind other local star and second seed Medi Veminardi (REU). aLSO Advancing today were Top Guns Frederico Morais (Ericeira, PRT), Tom Neuschwanger (REU), Tom Cloarec (FRA) and Vasco Ribeiro (Carcavelos, PRT).

10 aPRIL 2011: Similar clean and glassy three-foot waves were on offer on Day 2 of competition today, wrapping-up Round 1 in another fantastic fashion and led by former ASP World Junior Champion (2009) Maxime Huscenot (St Gilles, REU). Much expected for his second appearance in an ASP sanctioned event on his home island in seven years, Huscenot left no chance to his Heat 9 opponents letting his local knowledge and accurate technique speak to secure the event's third top score.

Coming from a series of ASP 6-Star and ASP Prime Series contests in Australia, Huscenot was out of reach for fellow heat competitors, the Reunion Island resident netting 14.25 points in the first half of the 30-minute battle.

In a mix of progressive surfing and classic bottom-to-top maneuvers, the remaining sixteen surfers of Round 1 enjoyed some good surf conditions offering the crowds another exciting performance during two hours.

Last year's ASP European Junior rankings underdog and now considered a potential Top 5 finisher if not better, Caribbean native William Aliotti (St Barth, BLM) was able to advance as well to get his 2011 campaign underway confidently. Aliotti, whose career peak is an equal 3rd finish in an ASP European Junior 1-Star event, is aiming at confirming last year's performance and starting the year strong in Reunion.

With promising and consistent swells on the horizon and another seven days of waiting period remaining for the ASP 3-Star men's Yop reunion Surf Pro Junior and ASP 2-Star Rexona Girls Pro Junior, event officials decided to call the event off for the afternoon and let remaining contenders some time to train and get ready for Round 1 of competition.
