4. Taipei 101

Height: 1,670 ft Location: Taipei, Taiwan

When the tower opened on December 31st 2004, it was the world’s tallest building until the Burj Khalifa came along. Taipei 101was created as a symbol of the evolution of technology and Asian tradition.

In July 2011, it became the tallest building to be awarded the Platinum LEED certification, the highest LEED certification attainable. Its two-year long green retrofit cost $2 million, but reduces energy costs by $700,000 annually. The green features include double-paned blue-green glazed curtain walls, offering heat and UV protection that can block outside heat by 50%, and a water recycling system that meets 20–30% of the building's water needs.
