1. Burj Khalifa

Height: 2,717 ft Location: Dubai, The United Arab Emirates

Officially opening in January, 2010, this skyscraper signifies Dubai’s economic expansion from an oil based economy to tourism and services, and sought to put Dubai on the map as a global city. It was designed by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, who also designed the Willis Tower and the up-and-coming One World Trade Center.

The Burj Khalifa uses a low-emissivity glass with thermal insulation and reflective glazing to protect against high temperatures. It has one of the world's largest condensate recovery systems that diverts and reuses water from air conditioning, reducing the need for municipal potable water. For electricity, it uses individual electric energy monitoring systems, smart lighting and mechanical control to monitor electricity use.
