The Conductors and Drivers
Train drivers and conductors must be in full uniform at all time, including their spotless white gloves. Female conductors are common, and the manner and decorum of all train staff is impeccable -- after taking all tickets in a car, at the far end the conductor will face the passengers and bow for up to five seconds before moving on to the next car.
Shinkansen trains are computerized, so drivers are primarily there to control speeds, ensure trains arrive at the next station on time, and maneuver trains to the correct stopping point at all stations. However, drivers are trained on advanced simulators to deal with emergencies such as snow or fog, mechanical problems, and even the uncoupling of train cars.
