Inca traditions
117 Pictures in 2017 - #27 - Cross
This is a tapestry we bought while in Peru last December. We were immediately enthralled with the vivid colors, but became even more enamored with it as we learned about the symbolism. The Inca cross is one of the more powerful symbols of the ancient Peruvians, and is seen extensively in Incan architecture, including at Machu Picchu. The cross appears multiple times in this tapestry. Additionally, as explained to us by our guide on the Inca trail, the Inca hold three animals as symbols of the world. The snake represents the underground, the puma is for the earth, and the condor is for the skies. The condor is the only bird strong enough to fly to the heavens. These three animals are also found throughout the Incan culture. This tapestry clearly depicts the condor, and there are other images that might be construed as puma and snake.
