Unicorn and the Lady
115 Pictures for 2015 - # 9 - Mythological Creature
On our recent trip to Paris, one of the highlights for me was a visit to the Cluny Museum. the masterpiece there is the series of tapestries called "The Lady and the Unicorn". There are six tapestries, woven in Flanders in the 1500s. This is often considered one of the greatest works of art from the Middle Ages in all of Europe. There are six tapestries, each large enough to cover a wall. Five depict the senses (taste, hearing, sight, smell, touch), and the sixth has the words "À mon seul désir". The meaning of this remains unknown, but is usually thought to be mean "love" or "higher love" or "understanding".
The tapestries were phenomenal, and the photos I have cannot in any way do justice to their magnificence. This is a portion of the sixth tapestry "À mon seul désir".
