This was the second of my series trying to do street portraits with permission.

I was sketching outside Poundland. These two came out for a fag. (There's student accommodation next door.) The girl noticed me drawing & came over to ask about it. I said "Stand in front of me and I'll draw you!" She said she'd never been drawn before. I did this in the time it took them to finish their fags. They took a look, said nice things & went back inside.

A few minutes later, I noticed a jumbo pack of bog rolls next to me. It had to be theirs. Another girl came out for a fag. I explained the situation and she said "What did they look like?" I showed her the sketch. She said she knew them & headed inside with the package. "Nice sketch, by the way," she threw over her shoulder.

So, who said sketching is not a socially useful activity?
