Aurora Labyrinthus

A few hours of the last full day of our houseboat/kayak tour of Lake Powell was spent exploring Labyrinth Canyon, which is only accessible from the lake. Peter Böhringer expertly guided our large craft through the increasingly restricted walls of the canyon until we could go no further. Peter, Bill Bowman, Jen Hall-Bowman and I then kayaked roughly 1/4 mile (+/-) upstream to the end of the waters, where a 15 minute stroll brought us to the narrowest sections of this aptly named canyon. Our arrival was perfectly timed, as the light show was just getting underway.

I've been to many slot canyons on the Colorado Plateau over the years and I have to say that Labyrinth Canyon ranks right up there among the best (although none can compare with Antelope Canyon). It was a stellar way to end an already excellent tour of Lake Powell.

On a side note, this was my first time on a kayak ever. After some initial awkwardness (sorry, Peter), it ended up being a fun way to navigate the narrower channels of the lake.

This image is a blend of three different exposures in order to overcome the dynamic range limitations of the camera.

A short, simple but concise explanation of why colors like this appear deep in the bowels of these canyons can be found here:
