Halleaths Camp 1941
James Murray from Edinburgh sent a leaflet--Top Secret--the Second World War in Dumfries and Galloway--to the website. It contained a brief account of Halleaths Camp and the first photo I've seen of the site of the camp.
Features identified are:
1. Disused railway bridge over the Annan at Priestdykes
2. Priestdykes Farm
3. Castle Loch
4 & 6 Site of Halleaths Camp from Priestdykes Farm to Transport Company/Tile Factory area
5. Part of Annan meander near Halleaths House
6. Innerfield
The caption reads: "The mansion at Halleaths was taken over by the army and a large camp built in the grounds
A reconnaissance unit stationed there practiced for the D-Day landings by embarking from a wooden pier on the golf course, crossing the loch (Kirk they must mean) in an assault craft and storming the back gardens in Bruce Street.
By 1945, the NAAFI canteen at Lochmaben had served half a million cups of tea!"
Comments welcome of any camp experiences
