Old Trafford, Throstle Nest Junction, BR 47635 'Jimmy Milne' (08.43 Newcastle - Liverpool Lime Street) 13th January 1991.
In theory a loco-hauled Trans Pennine Express working should have passed this point today at roughly the same time today ... alas not to be.
This was the scene in January 1991 and 47635 has just passed the site of Throstle Nest Jct where the Midland Route from Manchester Central via Didsbury and Cheadle Heath to Derby and St Pancras via the Peak district came off. Also on the derelict land to the right was Cornbrook sidings and carriage shed.
Just above the loco on the other side of the Bridgewater Canal is the former Pomona Docks 1-4 on the Manchester Ship Canal.
Today the Metrolink Pomona station exists on an elevated section of track parallel to the canal.
* The last loco-hauled Trans Pennine working was seven days later 20/01/91.
* I do not know if it is still possible to do a 'before and after' shot here but will look into it.
