Derby 4F at Kirkstall 15th May 1964.
This 0-6-0 was one of a batch of 192 built at Derby. They were designed by Henry Fowler,1911 saw the first loco leave the works and in 1921 44003 emerged, the construction, with detail differences continued until 1941 and 772 of these goods locos were produced, this example lasted until 31st May 1965 and was cut at Wards of Beighton 31st August 1965, i had a few runs on passenger trains with these engines and once while struggling through Armley Canal with 6 on,our excursion to Morecambe came to a shuddering halt,we had been checked, but it must have given our crew time to drop some clinker 'cos just as we got the right away. . . .a Britannia thundered by on the ajacent track,we had a proper 4 track railway then . . .not the rationalised truncation we have now, anyroad orf we went , me and me spotty pal were very surprised to be bowling along at a fine old rate. . .as was the tradition in those dear dead days,we had our heads out of the window for most of the trip,by Keighley i was black bright, but as it was my habit to sport a WW2 gas mask, with the pipe cut off,i was clean behind the rubber but the rest of me had collected a ton of char and soot, especially in Apperley Tunnel. I changed my vantage to the side corridor, and was leaning so far out i could see the footplate on curves!,when a young lady squeezed past me in the aisle,i jumped back in, complete with respirator, with cinders in my hair and she took a look at me and screamed ! the compartment door slid open and her boyfriend enquired in a broad accent 'What the F**ks going on' i said i was sorry . . .she said she thought i was a Demon. !. . .he said he thought i was a Pillock !. . .when i got back onto the cushions in the next compartment we could hear him giving her extreme unction all the way to Lancaster Green Ayre. Needless to say we did not see the sea that day,too far out, but we did see Carnforth and Hest Bank. . .!
