The Parish of the Immaculate Conception was constructed in 1600 by the townspeople of Malabon( formerly Hacienda Tambobong). The image was installed in the main altar in 1700. The image of the Parish of the Immaculate Conception of Malabon, Metro Manila was formerly known as the La Purissima Concepcion. It was canonically crowned on December 7, 1986 through a Papal Bull issued in September 1986. The image was renamed the Immaculada Concepcion in honor of the Dogma of the Immaculate Conception which was declared by Rome in 1854.
The Malabon Grand Procession has its own ceremonial rituals. The municipal government of Malabon and the barangay government of Concepcion hosts the Pagoda fluvial parade and the fishermen's Festival. The celebration lasts for four days. On the day of the feast, the image is taken out of the church for a whole day procession.
The fishermen's festival is held on December 9. The image of St. Joseph joins the La Purissima image in a motorcade of fishermen and shipyard families from Navotas, Malabon and Bulacan. The Dalaw Bahay follows, wherein the image is brought from one house to another on a healing mission, followed by the fishermen's banquet. The image is then taken for a grand boat procession at night on the Malabon River and Manila Bay. The arrival of the image of the Virgin is welcomed with the Salve Regina. The Lusong sa Tubig caps off the festivities wherein people plunge into the water to symbolize the renewal of their baptismal vows.
The Araw ng Concepcion is held on December 10. The affair is highlighted with mass baptisms, confirmations and weddings. Malabon business groups, headed by Filipino-Chinese investors, dedicate offerings to the la Purissima. It is their way of thanking and acknowledging the Virgin for their success.
[edit] Unverified Miracles and Testimonies
A Chinese businessman fell accidentally into the Malabon river in 1880. While waiting for the rescue, he called and prayed to the Virgin and promised to help in building the church near him. He was about to sink when a boat came just in the nick of time to save him. He donated a marble font to the conception Church on which the name of his wife was inscribed.
A Chinese trader who lost his vision was advised to watch the Pagoda Procession. He refused because he could not see in the first place, but he agreed eventually. When the Virgin's Pagoda floated by, his vision slowly returned.
