Een oorkonde uit 1008 is het oudste bewaard gebleven document waarin Mechelen wordt vermeld, onder de naam Machlines. Later veranderde deze in Machele (12e eeuw), Mechgelme (14e eeuw) en uiteindelijk Mechelen (15e eeuw). De naam van de stad zou afgeleid zijn van het woord mahal, dat naar een vergader- of gerechtsplaats verwijst.
Tot 1795 vormde de stad het centrum van de kleine zelfstandige Heerlijkheid Mechelen. In dat verband had het gebied dezelfde status als bv. Holland, Zeeland, Vlaanderen en Brabant.
Gedurende een korte periode in de 16e eeuw werden de Nederlanden vanuit Mechelen geregeerd. Deze periode heeft bijgedragen tot het uitgebreide kunstbezit en diverse merkwaardige gebouwen. Momenteel heeft de stad het op een na hoogste aantal beschermde gebouwen van Vlaanderen, waaronder vier UNESCO-vermeldingen.
Mechelen in Dutch, Malines in French, Mechlin in English is a Dutch-speaking city and municipality in the province of Antwerp, Flanders, Belgium. The municipality comprises the city of Mechelen proper, some quarters at its outskirts, the hamlets of Nekkerspoel (adjacent) and Battel (a few kilometers away), as well as the villages of Walem, Heffen, Leest, Hombeek, and Muizen. The Dijle flows through the city, hence the term 'Dijlestad' (City by the Dijle).
Mechelen lies on the major urban and industrial axis Brussels-Antwerp, about 25 km from each city. Inhabitants find employment at Mechelen's southern industrial and northern office estates, as well as at offices or industry near the capital, or at industrial plants near Antwerp's seaport.
