Rita Crane Photography: Shutters & Wisteria, Provence
I discovered this window with its balcony, in Gorbio, an ancient perched village above the French Riviera, built by people who long ago found a safe haven on cliffs in the Maritime Alps.
This village is now only minutes away from the sea by car. When it was first built - centuries ago - it was at least a day's journey traveling by donkey on a rocky and narrow dirt road that rose steeply up into the mountains.
Today the place still feels hardy. Weathered by so many harsh winters and hot summers. Strong. Enduring. Yet a beautiful painted note of lyricism along the wall tells us that life isn't as hard as it used to be any more.
