Rita Crane Photography: Ponte Vecchio at Sunset, Florence / Firenze / River Arno / reflections

Before all the roads we now take for granted were built, the River Arno was the life blood of Florence for centuries. Huge loads of materials were transported to Florence via barge or boat from all over Tuscany and beyond. Marble, stone, wood, the precious minerals used for making paints, In other words, most of the materials that were transformed by the artists of the Renaissance into sculpture, architecture, and painting arrived via the Arno. Nowadays, at sunset or illuminated at night, (see the night shot below in he comment section), the river puts on a magic show. The ancients would never have seen it looking like this, but they would certainly have enjoyed it had they been able to!
