A little detour to sunny southern France today with a photo from my archives. It was a lovely afternoon in Menton, the last town along the French Riviera before the Italian border. This was a charming glimpse of the gardens at one of the former late 19th century British hotels of the Belle Epoque. There are several of these perched along a hillside overlooking the Mediterranean. Sheltered as it is from cold northern winds by the Maritime Alps, Menton has the warmest winters in all of France. As a result all manner of exotic gardens thrive there.

 

I think one can get a taste of some of the excitement that Matisse and Renoir enjoyed when they traveled to this part of France. It's very true that the light, cultural atmosphere, colors and climate were so different from their home regions. It inspired their beautiful paintings!
