Rita Crane Photography: Bambino and Bikinis, Burano

The first of three photos posted here at this link today (scroll down for the other two). This storefront was on the colorful island of Burano, north of Venice in the lagoon, where all the houses are painted in bright vivid colors. This building was no exception!! The Madonna was joined here by some cheerful little pink bikinis to add a playful note to this very Italian scene. I love how in Italy and Southern France one sees beautiful statues of Mary and her little Bambino rather than the suffering martyrdom on the cross -- the preferred icon so very evident in the colder climes of Northern Europe. These Bambinis are a constant reminder of sweetness and loving kindness at every corner.

What I couldn't help noticing here was the whimsical juxtaposition of the spiritual and more mundane aspects of womanhood. Both valid, in my opinion, although for the long road, since youth fades and old age arrives for us all, the spiritual may be more useful in the long run!! ;-) Here the Bambini is pointing upwards to remind us all of the Great Spirit ..... that - through our mothers and the Great Energy of the Universe - gives us Precious Life.

This seemed like a fitting photo to post on Mother's Day. Have a happy day!
