I loved this view taken from the top of the Printemps department store near the Opera. I went to the outside deck on the top floor and had a fabulous view of the Sacre Coeur (Sacred Heart Cathedral) and Montmartre. There it all was: the juxtaposition of monumental structure (the Sacre Coeur built by France as an atonement of sorts -- after their very sad defeat by Bismarck's troops in 1871) and the wonderful jumble of old buildings clustered at its feet.
Montmartre is the highest hill in Paris, and a village atmosphere still pervades these ancient streets. There's a great description of it in Wikipedia if you like history: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montmartre.
It was incorporated into the city of Paris in the 1800's and became legendary because of the modern artists who lived here in the 1920's such as Vincent van Gogh, Pierre Brissaud, Alfred Jarry, Gen Paul, Jacques Villon, Raymond Duchamp-Villon, Henri Matisse, André Derain, Suzanne Valadon, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas, Maurice Utrillo, Toulouse-Lautrec, Théophile Steinlen.
Those artists gave shape and color to our world in a way that had never been seen before, and I salute them!
