Rita Crane Photography: View of the Duomo, Florence
Florence! I came around the corner never having seen the Duomo except in books, and this incredible structure just totally blew my socks off. I had no idea of its scale! The Duomo stood at the end of this narrow street, like a mountain, grander than I ever imagined. This is one of my first impressions of this Renaissance city, and still one of my favorite photos. It was March 2003 when I took this picture, during the pre-emptive invasion of Iraq by American armed forces, and Italy had peace flags hanging out of many many windows, making plain their lack of support for the war. There were many people in Italy, like us, who felt an ominous concern about this military move by the US Defense Department, and who were already back then, making our feelings evident.
So this is a historic image of the Duomo, a time when hearts and minds around the globe were shocked by American foreign policy and expressing their concern. The flag says 'PACE' ....(Peace)....in big bold white letters against a rainbow background and there were many of them wherever we went in Italy that year.
The idea that countries might be able to cooperate enough to share and trade fairly the natural resources on planet Earth rather than outright steal them and kill over them is an idea long overdue..............but tragically homo sapiens in general doesn't yet have the psychological maturity to be able to do it.
Humanity has a long long way to go in its journey.....in its evolution of consciousness. People still act as if killing one another were a valid form of problem solving!! UNbelievable!
Just think about it: we wouldn't let 3 year olds kill one another to solve quarrels, yet on planet Earth it is considered normal to spend billions of dollars on tools that will do just that: kill others to solve conflicts!!! UNbelievable.
