Mosteiro Santa María de Melón (Ourense)

It dates from the XII century, it belonged to the Císter's order, who owned the land thanks to the privileges granted by kings as, for instance, Alfonso IX.

During its epoch of magnificence the influence of this monastery went so far as to conditionate the

future of other monasteries in the area, as it is the one of San Clodio. Towards the end of the XIX century, it fell into decline, basically due to the effects of the ecclesiastical confiscation and adverse climate conditions. Nowadays it is in private ownership.

The church, of latin cross, presents three longitudinal naves with semicircular apses, the chapel's head is made of a major chapel surrounded by an ambulatory, opened to three semicircular apses which convey to the major altar. This model of head, which is unique of Galicia, recalls, by its likeness with the monastery of Oseira, to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. The style of the Císter's order is easy to notice in this monastery due to its remarkable austerity.
