It faced closure on 30 August 1985 for showing an uncensored film and allowing customers in as soon as they'd paid for membership, rather than waiting for the required 24 hours.
The Council wanted to close it down.
It was demolished following an explosion on 20 September 1985, half-an-hour after closing time.
Liverpool Echo - Saturday 21 September 1985.
EXPLOSION WRECKS CITY CINEMA
Dale Street Cordoned Off
A MYSTERY explosion ripped through Dale Street through Liverpool's controversial adult cinema, the Gilmore, in Manchester Street, last night, half-an-hour after closing time.
As fire swept the building, firemen took more than two hours to bring the blaze under control.
Dale Street was cordoned off for a while by police when the badly damaged building threatened to collapse.
The city building surveyor ordered it to be demolished.
Today fire experts and detectives were combing through the rubble for clues.
Several nearby buildings suffered smoke and water damage.
Site is still open (above the Mersey Tunnel entrance).
