Kale and calendula flower

The principle of companion planting has long been used by farmers and gardeners - the idea that certain plant combinations lead to mutual benefit and better growth for the plants. This can be based on chemical exchanges through the soil, the insect repelling qualities of some plants, the particular physical qualities of the plants - even something as simple as that the shade thrown by one kind of plant creates an ideal light level for another kind of plant.
