1985 Audi Sport Quattro S1 E2

This is the victorious Audi Quattro S1 E2 that was driven during the 1985 Olympus Rally by 1983 World Rally Champion Hannu Mikkola.

The Quattro was introduced to the World Rally Championship in 1981, the first four wheel drive car to compete and would revolutionise the sport. The car would win its second event in Sweden with Mikkola at the wheel and deliver Drivers Championships for Hannu Mikkola in 1983 and Stig Blomqvist in 1984. Manufacturers titles for Audi came in 1982 and 1984.

The Quattro appeared in a number of guises including the original A1 and A2 models. The new Group B regulations for 1984 would see the arrival of the short-wheelbase Sport Quattro S1 and ultimately the Sport Quattro S1 E2 shown above.

With Group B rally cars obtaining almost Formula 1 levels of power, it took a fatal accident in the 1986 Rally of Portugal for the authorities to make a stance and Group B was outlawed for 1987. Thus ended the rally career of the Group B supercars.

Between 1981 and 1985, the Quattro would win a total of 23 world championship events.
