Wellington peace garden Shropshire 160814 (15)

I did a wedding on Saturday and took these photographs of the peace garden.

A garden dedicated to the concept of world peace will be planted outside a new civic centre in Shropshire. Opened March 2012

Telford and Wrekin Borough Council has donated a patch of land for the garden in front of its new building in Wellington.

George Evans, a local Quaker who had the idea for the garden, said it would not be paid for with public money.

"The folks who put the plants in are going to be the ordinary people of Wellington," he said.

Mr Evans said he had already received expressions of support for the idea of the peace garden from local faith groups and schools.

"Nobody is going to dominate it, and that includes me," he said.

He said he wanted the garden, which will be cared for by volunteers, to be kept "very simple yet beautiful".

The land the garden will be planted on will remain council property.

Mr Evans served in the infantry in World War II, fighting in Normandy and taking part in the liberation of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp.

He became a pacifist after his wartime experiences.
