On the Job at the Anahiem 1993 Travel Show

I'm working the Inyo National Forest information booth at the annual Sports, RV, and Travel Show in the Anaheim Convention Center. Arranging the logistics of traveling, covering shifts, and transporting and setting up the booth and materials was a big workload. It was a great assignment and one of my favorite duties until budget cuts prevented us from doing this.

Being at this event and serving the National Forest visitors near their home turf was immensely satisfying and just plain fun. I spoke with hundreds of people each day and the feeling of respect worked both ways. Helping the public during my career, passing along the information I learned about the recreation opportunities, flora, fauna, geology and history of the National Forests I worked on was one of the loves of my life. Being able to serve the public was a privilege.

Outdoor recreation on public lands is more important than many people realize. This activity is literally " re creation." This recreation helps maintain the mental health of millions of people in the United States. To help facilitate this is why I felt so privileged to be in my job. Watching people enjoying themselves, especially seeing families whose multiple generations visited the locations I was assigned to was deeply satisfying.

I was on the fast track of the ladder climb of a career. I made a big decision to get off the ladder and step down from lower management to a field supervisor position on one of the most beautiful and visited National Forests in the country, the Inyo National Forest. My heart was in the field and to be directly involved with the visitors and the employees getting their fingernails dirty. A voluntary downgrade is not looked on by management in the best light. I did not care and worked the position for 11 years before an illness struck me down and prematurely ended my career.

I worked hard and had the respect of the upper management of the Inyo NF. I had planned to move up the ladder for the last 3-5 years of my career to increase the average "high three" years of earnings for my retirement calculation. My voluntary downgrade would have been a plus by then and I would have had a relatively easy time getting a promotion and transfer to another National Forest. I was like a pitcher with a one hitter pitching in the seventh inning with one out and getting pulled because my arm was sore. I so wanted the complete 9 inning game, but could not continue. It was like experiencing a death for me and it still stings.
