Detector Electrode

Victoreen Condenser r-Meter Model 70 Radiation Dosimeter

Manufactured by Victoreen Instrument Company in Cleveland, Ohio c.1945

Canada Museum of Science and Technology

Artifact no. 1998.0198

This is a great shot of the detector inside the steel encasing. The black bakelite/carbon tube would encase the aluminum electrode on the right. The distance the two "wings" move away from the aluminum electrode would essentially be the measure in Roentgens of the level of gamma ray exposure. There was a simple concept of ionization behind the dosimeter even though it appears quite technologically advanced and the group believed that, in this way, it portrayed a sense of "image is everything" that is reminiscent of the Space and Arms' Race.
