using useless space

one of several DIYprojects Larry and I tackled this summer.

At some point I guess the room we're using as a livingroom in our apt. over the rental must have been a bedroom, with a closet in the corner.

Now that it's our livingroom, the couch is on the only wall it works on, with the closet at one end..

As a closet, it's useless.

We really didn't need it for storage space.

What I DID need was an end table at that end of the couch.

I studied the situation.

We could have knocked the wall out and taken the closet out entirely, which would have opened up the corner, and then I'd have been able to jam a small side table in there, but I'd still have to leave the wicker chair (or any chair) on the other wall.

So we decided to take the doors off the closet and turn it into a "built in".

The shelf on the bottom is low enough to serve as an end table, so I can have lighting at that end, and a place to set a glass.

We finished it off with some faux wood wallpaper on the back wall and added an extra

shelf for books and knick knacks.

It turned out pretty good and it serves it's purpose.
