(The S on the end of Frederick in the CWGC record appears to be an error).

Frederick Walter Edwards was born on the 21/06/1890. His enlistment papers can be seen at the Canadian Library, here

He had been born in Norwich, England, and his next of kin is given as a Julia Edwards, of Fishers Building, Grapes Hill, Norwich. He gives his trade as Teamster.

He enlisted on the 25th February 1915.

He is described as 5 feet 4 inches tall, with Black Hair, Brown eyes and a fresh complexion.

His distinguishing marks are a tattoo of five dots on his left wrist.

There are two potential Julia Edwards with Norwich connections on the 1901 Census, and as one has a 6 year old son called Frederick, and it being likely that a family would use the same first name for a child, then the most likely candidate is a 38 year old married charwoman, (husband absent at the time of the census), living at 18 Queen of Hungary Yard, Norwich. She has four children to support ranging from 9 to 1.

The same individual appears to be on the 1891 Census at 5 Curtis Buildings, with a husband Edward Edwards, (a Baker), and two Children, Frederick, (aged 2 - still doesn’t really tie up), and Sidney aged 8 months, neither of whom are with her in 1901.

However these names do tie in with the inscription on the headstone.

The only S Edwards recorded for the 21st March 1918 is:-

The other brother I believe is Walter.

The Julia Edwards on the 1901 Census has a son Walter of the right age.
