The loss of HMS Galatea

Hit by salvo of torpedoes fired by U557 whilst entering swept channel 30 miles NW

of Alexandria. Sank in three minutes. 150 survivors were rescued by HMS GRIFFIN

and HMS HOTSPUR.

In loving memory of Henry Bromley Maling, Vicar of this parish from January 1914 to July 1944, Died 2nd September 1946, aged 82 years.

 

And of his only son,

 

Henry Thomas Maling

Killed Fire-fighting in London, May 11th 1941. Aged 30 years.

 

Also his wife Harriott Emily Maling, Died May 26th 1954, aged 76 years.

 

The last major attack on London was on 10 May: 515 bombers destroyed or damaged many important buildings, including the British Museum, the Houses of Parliament and St. James's Palace. The raid caused more casualties than any other: 1,364 killed and 1,616 seriously injured
