A forum post has identified that he was aboard Avro Anson Mk1 N5322 of 8 FFS which dived into the ground at Montreathmont, Angus, Scotland. Working on a process of elimination, he was probably the Air Gunner\Wireless Operator in the crew.

Birth and family

The birth of a William A Augood was registered in the Norwich District in the April to June quarter of 1921. His mothers maiden name was Roope.

I could not find a marriage of a “Mr Augood” to a “Miss Roope” prior to the birth of William. I did investigate whether his mother might perhaps have been widowed and so would have been married under her old married name rather than her maiden name. A few possible marriages raised a possibility but “died” for want of a dead spouse. For example an Albert Augood married a Maude Eggert in the Norwich District in the April to June quarter of 1919. Looking for a possible earlier marriage of an Eggert to a Roope, I identified that’s a Walter Eggert married a Maud Rooper, also in the Norwich District, in the January to March quarter of 1912. However, I could not find the death of a Walter Eggert between 1912 and 1919 anywhere in England and Wales, nor could I see him on the CWGC site.

Likely siblings of William, (all Norwich District, mothers maiden name Roope):-

April to June 1925…………..Maud A

April to June 1929…………..Edith A

January to March 1931……Betty A
