Lesser Weever Fish Echiichtys vipera
Found at very low tide and we saw two. This fish has poisonous spines on its dorsal fin. The fish grows up to 14cm. It is not easy to spot.
Do not tamper with this fish it has a very painful sting.
Found on Barmouth beach. Very much alive.
If stung place the affected part in water as hot as can be borne. Be careful not to scald the skin. Top up water to keep it hot. When pain subsides rub with a Antihistamine cream. My son got stung and a year later he
says he still gets pain in his foot. I would recommend wear plastic sandals while bathing. He said he would not have been able to drive home. I did not get too close I was not prepared to kneel on the sand as others may have been hidden.
If there is no access to hot water fresh urine can help to ease the pain.
