Guild House
Guild House is an apartment building for the elderly, at 7th & Spring Garden. It's one of those interesting bits of architecture that you could pass by a million times and never realize it's there, but in its day it stood apart from the prevalent Modernist towers that were rising up around the city. Designed by Philadelphia-based architect Robert Venturi in 1964, the place still stands out for its unconventional use of conventional elements, such as its large arched window, and its single column obstructing the entance. Interestingly, a giant TV antenna sculpture used to rise off the roof, front and center as sort of a flippant symbol of the elderly who reside there... and spend so much of their time in front of the television.
