CSX former ACL mainline at Burroughs, Georgia...Summer 1986

It is April, 1986 and we are at Burroughs, Georgia looking south on the CSX mainline. This is former ACL trackage and where the SAL once crossed at grade. After the SCL merger, the Diamond was eventually removed and a connection track was placed in service here to route S Line Trains to the A Line.

(Both routes were parallel for several miles) A new connection was also built at Ogeechee to connect back to the S line. Both routes were used by SCL up into the CSX era when the former SAL was abandoned south of Riceboro. We are looking at CTC Signals and in the distance is a flashing Signal for a southbound Train coming down the old SAL from Savannah. This was and remains a very interesting place. Trains approaching from the south can be seen for many miles due to the ruler straight trackage. In 1985, when the former SAL route was still in use, approaching Trains could be heard coming up to the connection at Ogeechee, about 2 miles down track from here...then the Headlight would suddenly appear. We saw this, so I know the route was still in use in mid 1985. But traffic was rerouted sometime after that as the line was closed by the end of 1985. The Signal Bridge was removed in 1992. All the poles are gone but there are plenty of Trains using both routes here today!!! About 30 plus Trains go by here daily. Burroughs is about 10 miles south of Savannah. It was pitch dark outside the night I shot this "time exposure"

but the sky is quite lit up for reasons unknown to me. This was about a 3 minute exposure.
