Habsburg Flatware
Marta Beyer ‘07
IES: Nantes, France
The Hofburg Palace, in the heart of Vienna, Austria, is a remarkable example of the Habsburg Empire’s power and wealth. When touring the imperial palace, I was struck by the elaborate collection of royal tableware. The lavish lifestyle of the monarchs was revealed simply by their golden table settings. Even the Habsburg knives and forks, such a small facet of their daily routine, reflect the sumptuousness of their lifestyle. In Vienna, tourists look forward to delicious pastries and coffee, but will it be served to them on gold?
