May 26, 2021
1000 Grandmothers from the Bay Area and beyond, Lakota grandmothers from South Dakota, and grandmothers from the Twin Cities joined together in front of the Minnesota governor’s mansion to support the critical work being done by Indigenous groups in northern Minnesota to STOP the LINE 3 pipeline.
This coming week, the Canadian company Enbridge, is expected to resume drilling for the pipeline, after a pause for the big spring thaw. This next phase will take them under the Mississippi River at multiple crossing points in order to move almost 1 million barrels of the dirty tar sands oil a day from Alberta, Canada to Superior, Wisconsin. The route of Line 3 passes through Minnesota’s pristine northern lake region, Anishinaabe treaty lands and wild rice lakes and the headwaters of the Mississippi River. While an older version of the Line 3 pipeline already exists, this new version would be larger, carrying more dirty oil and has an altered route that crosses a wide swath of new lake and river region and treaty lands. All this at a time when it is critical that the world finally address the massive threats of fossil fuels to our climate and the well being of all future generations.
As I write this, thousands are expected to be heading towards northern Minnesota to answer the Indigenous call to join them in the fight to STOP the Line 3 tar sands oil pipeline. This "Treaty People Gathering" has been called by Honor the Earth and 15 other groups: “On June 5-8, we will gather in Northern Minnesota to put our bodies on the line, to stop construction and tell the world that the days of tar sands pipelines are over.” While others are making their way to Minnesota, I’d really like to encourage those who can’t do this to offer their support to all those who will truly be putting their bodies on the line. This was the message of all the grandmothers that gathered at the governor’s mansion. This is our responsibility… to stand with the youth and solidly support them in any way that is open to us, as they do what needs to be done for their own futures and the generations to come.
Please consider following Honor the Earth and contributing in any way you are able!
