Honduras - Root Causes of Migration

Delegation - March18-25, 2019

Tocoa Panel - Land and Water Defenders describe the situation in the fertile northern Bajo Aguán region of Honduras.

The afro-indigenous Garifuna community of the northern coastal region of Honduras spoke of their forced displacement, due to large-scale tourism development projects, from land that has been their home since 1779. They are fighting desperately to hold onto their unique culture and identity.

Today, all 44 Garifuna communities are involved in struggles to defend their land against the concessions the government is granting to tourism corporations. Four out of five now face eviction from their land.
