Fires & Fire Brigade Stations

This image was created as an attempt to combine more than one datasets available from the recently instated Greek geodata portal.

What is visible here are 15929 fire incidences over a time-span of 1.5 year, approximately, "clustered" around their nearest fire brigade stations.

I did this because i wanted to investigate the correlation of fire severity (burnt surface area) to its distance from the nearest fire-brigade station.

Unfortunately, the fire-brigade station data were incomplete (there are about 300 active fire-brigade stations in Greece and from these, the "public buildings" dataset contained just over a third of (137).

Therefore, all i could do was just count the "load" of each fire-station and rank them according to this (still, not a very accurate measurement with so many fire-brigade stations missing :-( ).

I hope the condition of the data improves in the future.

The image and a few more visualisations about fires in Greece can be found in the following two blog posts.

These are written in Greek, but hey, if you are interested in any more details just.....fire away (...couldn't resist!)
