Galápagos mockingbird (Mimus parvulus)
Santa Fe Island
Galapagos
Ecuador
Will be off Flickr on Thursday.
This Galapagos mockingbird is found only on the island of Santa Fe in the Galapagos and nowhere else. Its subspecies name is "barringtoni".
The Galapagos mockingbird is a locally common resident, breeding from October to April and nesting in trees or cacti. Range does nor overlap with any other species of mockingbird. Six subspecies are recognized: barringtoni (Santa Fe Island); bauri (Genovesa Island); hulli (Darwin Island); parvulus (Fernandina Island, Isabela Island, Santa Cruz Island, North Seymour Island and Daphne Island); personatus (Pinta Island, Marchena Island, Santiago Island and Rabida Island) and wenmani (Wolf Island).
The oldest male holds the responsibility for feeding and taking care of the young ones, and it does not matter if he is the parent. He is considered the alpha male. The family stays together as a unit way after the breeding season is over. The juveniles also take turns providing food for the young.
