UMass Lowell
Ames Building
The modest stature of this 9,000 square foot building belies the sophistication of its research-center occupant. The Ames Building is completely dedicated to the UMass Lowell Photonics and Optoelectronics Design and Fabrication Center, which focuses its research and business partnerships on innovative semiconductor-based device technologies. The Center’s equipment includes two Riber molecular beam epitaxy machines, as well as photolithography, fabrication and characterization equipment. The Center has a photoluminescence, laser/LED wave guide characterization and a device modeling laboratory.
Fun fact: Photonics is the study of photons, or little packets of light energy. Photonics extends throughout many areas of research: optics, lasers, electrical engineering and information storage and processing.
