Despite lots of speculation, it is still uncertain whether these tacks - running throught the heart of Maadi, Cairo's leafy suburb - actually play host to trains any more.

What is abundantly clear, having visited the area, is that the tracks do play host to human excrement and the usual Egyptian littering .
