Herb Riddle says: Still Life: Oh such wonder, I see here in this flower. To see such petals in the real is to behold natures beauty. To see it captured in this fashion and then presented to us in such a beautiful monochrome fashion is almost breathless. Art -certainly - poetry, yes that too. Oh, if only, I too could produce such masterpieces. Congratulations Cloudydaze

Herb Riddle says: The Human condition: Etheopia, country of beauty and hardship. As we here in Europe eat and live very comfortably, others have it, very differently. I don't know the story around this picture but I do know quality and interest when I see it. A picture to make us think! A worthy addition to the 'Great Themes'. Congratulations Frieda

Herb Riddle says: Reportage: mafete69, tells us a story here and I feel that I want to know more about this scene.- exactly what reportage is about. One of the great themes, who can honestly point and click their camera in such conditions. I pay my respects to these who do it in war, famine, politics and all newsworthy events. The centre of focus and technical quality in this is perfect. Congratulations Mafate69

Herb Riddle says: Glamour: Audrey by 'Blindside_half is in my opinion a perfect example of glamour in monochrome. Audrey here, looking so natural both reveals and hides her natural beauty. Blindside_half must be congratulated on capturing such a scene that locks our eyes on hers without embarrassment nor lust. The technical quality speaks for itself of course. Audrey, thank you for being the perfect model! Congratulation Blindside_half.

Herb Riddle says: Macro/close-up: our world's miniature, captured and presented in such photo as this sets a fine example for such a great theme. Beautiful shapes and tonal liquidity in this perfect monochrome sets a very high example for all to follow. Well done Burcu

Herb Riddle says: Landscapes: Of all the great themes, this is my personal favourite. Ian has produced a classic great here. Fine tonal texture alongside a wonderful eternal viewpoint that swallows us into this magnificent seashore scape. Smell the sea, listen to the sounds of lapping water and the odd sea bird. Who could ask for more? I could live with this - I salute you. Congratulations Ian

Herb Riddle says: Architecture: throughout the ages man has recorded his work and buildings. Here we have a magnificent example of portraying such work in monochrome. Not only is it a true image of this stairway in the Palace of Carlos, but Javier has presented it in a beautiful way by capturing it in this very special light and perspective. I expect to see a figure coming up the stair at any moment! Congratulations Jamomc22,

Herb Riddle says: Design: When we think of 'design' the thing that comes to mind is man-made objects such as buildings and objects, but here we see a perfect example of natures design, with a little help from Mitch. A perfect monochrome which embraces lovely tonal quality displays this sleeping swan in a most 'artful' fashion. The reflections, on this mirrored water, of course add to the tranquil feeling and serenity that swans exude. A worthy addition to this gallery. Congratulations Mitch

Herb Riddle says: 'Whitby 1' by Jeff Teasdale is my selection for the theme of 'Shape. These magnificent curves with their rich textures lead our eyes to where? The open cold and wet sea perhaps, or is it to the plight of these almost lone figures. This is what great photography is about - It makes us think and tells stories. Love it - Congratulations Jeff.

Herb Riddle says: The Rapture -such a seducing title for this seducing image. - OK, I know I have already put a landscape in this selection, but how could I refrain from adding this too. As in Joseph's original description this must be viewed on a black background for full effect. As to the picture, well, such dynamic lighting and strong 'bridge-like' foundation just does it for me. Proud to have this join us here. Congratulation Joseph.

Herb Riddle says: Bob Bowmans image of lines, rays and angles fits into what is generally regarded as 'Expression' in photography. These vertical lines that run into the distance, lit by this incredible contre-jour lighting takes our eyes and imagination into a new plain. Bob has done a great job with his composition as well as his subject and capture of light. His decision to present this as a monochrome is in my opinion a master stroke. Another photo that I would have been proud to have produced. Congratulations Bob.

Herb Riddle says: I could not resist the chance to add another 'Still Life' on here with this exquisite study. Meer Sadi has done what so many of us could never attempt, by putting into photo-form something we could hardly imagine. Not only is this study so imaginative but it also encompasses the very high standard of technical merit we come to expect of the best still life shots. Truly, a photo that I would have been proud to produce. Meer Sadi - I SALUTE you!

Herb Riddle says: Mikes portrait entitled 'Pilar' epitomises the grand old style of monochrome portraits. Using a system of metering inspired by Ansel Adams, the 'zone system' reminds me of my old days of trying such things via my Weston meter. This image has the unique quality brought about by real film (Ilford) and chemical processing, almost a forgotten art nowadays. As for Pilar, the expression and differential focus is a joy to behold. Mike, my appreciation and thanks for sharing.
