11 Dec 2009 - Simple Don'ts for Instant Relief
In such a fast-paced, competitive society, things can get pretty crazy pretty quickly, especially if you’re the kind of person who tends to swallow everything that’s shoved down your throat. It’s probably not surprising that you’re now suffering from indigestion and burnout.
Here are some simple “do-nots” or “don’ts” you can use to try to ease your stress:
DON’T over-schedule your day.
It seems like scheduling every minute would be the logical way to get everything done, but it actually tends to work against you. Some things will take longer than you expected, some things will interfere that you can’t predict. If you’re scheduled to the max, you’ll have no room to absorb them, things will overrun, and frustration will set in. Instead, aim maybe for about 75% scheduled, leaving 25% free.
DON’T say Yes to everything.
Saying Yes to everything clogs up your day with stuff you don’t want there. Doing other people’s work, answering annoying phone calls, fulfilling every favour can rob you of valuable time and energy.
DON’T allow short-term gratifications to get in the way of long-term rewards.
What are the little things sapping your time, energy and money? Are your long-term goals made all the more distant because of all your momentary wants and desires? That extra 20 minutes of sleep in the morning might seem like the best thing in the world, but you know it will only make you late. That new pair of shoes or mp3 player may seem like worthy investments, but if you’re already stretching your dollar, they’re not worth it. Think about the long term effects of your actions today.
DON’T give up.
When it seems like there’s no answer, push on. The answer may be just around the next corner Don’t let fear, anger, frustration, your money, or your in-laws for that matter, stop you from living your life. Keep going.
