SPAIN - Monasterio San Miguel de Escalada (1)

MONASTERIO SAN MIGUEL DE LA ESCALADA – CASTILLA & LEON

During the reign of Muhammad I (852-886), Emir of Córdoba, Christians were persecuted and had no choice but to convert or flee to the north of the Iberian Peninsula. Thus, during the reign of the King of Asturias Alfonso III (866-910), a community of monks from Córdoba founded the monastery of San Miguel de la Escalada, on lands ceded by the sovereign.

Of this monastery, located on the Way of St. James, 27 kilometers from the city of León, only the church remains today. However, it is one of the most representative works of pre-Romanesque Mozarabic art, forming part of the 10th century Mozarabic architecture of León.
