LYON - Confluence (8)

The French city of Lyon lies at the junction of the Rhône and the Saône.

Former capital of the Gauls at the time of the Roman Empire, Lyon is the seat of an archbishopric whose holder bears the title of Primate of the Gauls. Lyon became a major economic hub during the Renaissance. Lyon was historically an important area for the production and weaving of silk. Lyon played a significant role in the history of cinema: it is where Auguste and Louis Lumière invented the cinematograph.

Neighborhood of the “Confluence”

La Confluence is located at the southern end of the Presqu'île district, near the confluence of the Rhône and the Saône.

A former industrial district, La Confluence was home to the wholesale market and a port that supplied the city with goods arriving by river, as well as factories and prisons. Following the gradual closure of factories at the end of the 20th century, the urban project of Confluence made it possible, from 2009, to extend the city to the south and thus double the surface area of downtown Lyon. A model of contemporary urbanism, where development has been thought as a whole: housing, shops and services, leisure, transport modes and environmental preservation.
