Nichols stock was first traded on the American Stock Exchange after going public in August, 1972. They would peak at 46 stores in the mid 1980s before becoming PharmHouse and specializing with Health and Beauty Aids and household products. Nichols began as a variety store chain in New York in 1938 and opened their first Nichols Discount City in 1960 in Lancaster, Pa.. They sold their last variety store in 1969. They were a progressive discounter for a chain their size - most stores had 100,000 Square feet of sales area, had Pharmacies, Home Improvement Centers, Major Appliance departments and Auto Repair Centers . They purchased one of their wholesaler/distributors in 1977.
