Trying to stick with this week's theme of architecture, this is the Roundhouse in Camps Bay.

The Roundhouse is now a restaurant in Camps Bay. It was built in 1786 and it is the second oldest building in Camps Bay and it is a National Monument.

It was originally built as a small, round guardhouse to protect enemies from entering Cape Town from the Camps Bay side.

From 1817-1823 Lord Somerset used the round house as a hunting lodge. Lord Somerset and his friends would shoot lions, leopards and buck on the slopes of Lion's Head. The lodge consisted of a hall, a saloon, 6 bedrooms, a kitchen and a pantry and a slave room. Lord Somerset demanded only the finest fittings be used in the Roundhouse.

From 1837 onwards The Roundhouse was used as a restaurant, tea room, boutique hotel . From 1975 - 2006 it lay empty and derelict. In 2006 it was bought and restored and opened its doors as a fine restaurant in June 2008.
